Dog-age formulas are comparisons, not measurements.
Human-age comparison, life stage and lifespan data answer different questions.
The familiar rule uses a stepped conversion: about 15 human years for the first dog year, nine more for the second, then roughly five per additional year. It is simple, memorable and intentionally approximate.
The research formula uses a logarithmic relationship reported from Labrador Retriever DNA methylation. It is scientifically interesting, but one breed and one molecular signal do not create a universal biological clock.

The calculation explains why larger and shorter-lived breeds may reach the senior stage earlier than smaller, longer-lived dogs. Kindspan applies the same equation to every benchmark and rounds to one decimal place.
It is still an approximation. Function, health history and new changes matter more than crossing one calculated birthday.

The 2024 study reports breed medians, confidence intervals and sample sizes across 155 breeds.

The study is large, but it is not a global census. Breed recording, veterinary attendance, insurance and UK population patterns affect how well an estimate transfers elsewhere.

Track weight, body and muscle condition, movement after rest, sleep, appetite, drinking and medication response with the same method over time.
A new or concerning change deserves attention regardless of the dog’s calculated life stage.
