A median is the midpoint of the study population.
Median survival is the age by which half of the dogs in the source population had died and half had not.
It is not the average age of every dog, a normal range, or a forecast for one dog. The source population was drawn from dogs under primary veterinary care in the United Kingdom, so geography, veterinary access, breed coding and the years observed all shape the result.
Kindspan shows the sample size and confidence interval next to the median because a precise-looking number without its population context invites false certainty.
AAHA places the senior stage in the final quarter of expected lifespan.
AAHA describes the senior stage as the last quarter of a dog’s estimated lifespan.
Multiplying the population median by 0.75 creates a transparent conversation starter. It does not mean every dog changes stage on that birthday, and it says nothing by itself about pain, organ function, cognition or time remaining.
Function, new changes, prior results, medications and the veterinarian’s examination are more important than crossing a calculated threshold.
A breed ranking cannot explain why dogs live longer or shorter lives.
Body size, skull shape, genetic diversity and historical selection may contribute, but this dataset does not prove one simple cause.
Differences can also reflect breed popularity, veterinary access, insurance, neuter status, ownership patterns and how breeds were recorded.
A median should never become a “healthiest breed” verdict or a judgment about an individual dog or owner.
