Sequencing, the Dysbiosis Index, and pathogen PCR are different tests.
They measure different targets and answer different questions.
Commercial sequencing commonly reports the relative abundance of many organisms and compares the sample with a proprietary reference. The Dysbiosis Index measures defined bacterial groups with qPCR.
Pathogen panels look for selected infectious targets. Detecting a target does not automatically prove it caused the current symptoms.
An abnormal score does not identify the cause.
Diet, medication, recent illness, collection and storage can all change the measured community.
The Dysbiosis Index may support evaluation and monitoring in dogs with chronic enteropathy, but it does not name the underlying disease or dictate one intervention.
A commercial diversity or balance score is useful only when its method, reference population and connection to real health outcomes are visible.
Be cautious when the testing company also sells the remedy.
AAHA specifically urges caution when a company tests a pet’s microbiome and then recommends its own supplement.
Ask whether the proposed action was tested prospectively, whether the result predicts response, and whether independent clinicians have evaluated the claim.
A product should not be recommended because it pays commission or is sold beside the test.
Compare method, sample handling, evidence, and data access.
The number of organisms reported is one of the least useful comparison points.
Check sample stability, shipping limits, laboratory method, quality controls, reference population, retest policy, raw-data access, privacy, veterinary support and the exact claim the test supports.
Keep the original report and collection context. A method change can look like a biological trend when it is not.
